Chapter 26
âGawn.â
She had expected Jansen would cry off their trip to de Bekâs old home, perhaps send someone else with her, so she was surprised to hear his voice. She was sitting over coffee in her hotel room having decided on room service rather than a visit to the hotel restaurant.
âHendrik, Iââ Before she could finish her sentence, he interrupted her.
âMeyerâs dead. Kiki found him this morning when she arrived to open the shop.â
âMeyerâs dead?â She was aware that she had just repeated what he had told her and that she sounded like a character in a bad B-movie but she couldnât help it. She was stunned. âDead or murdered?â she asked, aware too that there was a slight tremor in her voice.
âItâs not clear yet how he died. There were no obvious signs of violence but itâs strange timing. We question him one day and he dies that night, a week after one of his employees dies too.â
âSomeoneâs cleaning up their mess; getting rid of any loose ends, like I said yesterday.â
âYes, I think so. Itâs just too coincidental. My meeting has just finished here. Iâll send a car to bring you to Elandsgracht. See you shortly.â
He rang off. He had not mentioned last night. She wouldnât be bringing it up either.

He looked exactly as he had the first time she had met him. Urbane and sophisticated, his suit well-fitting and his tie perfectly knotted. A senior officer on the rise.
âGood morning, Gawn.â Was there a slight edge to his voice or was she imagining it?
âHendrik.â She smiled, not too much, just enough to be friendly in a business sort of way. God, this was going to be awkward. She just knew it.
âCoffee?â
He reached a cup towards her as she seated herself in the same armchair as yesterday. Only yesterday. Hard to believe after all that had happened since then. She couldnât help but think about their coffee experience the previous evening. She wondered how often he had sat in this office with the effects of marijuana still in his system. Did he feel guilty as she had done when she was popping her little pills to help her get through? She had Seb to thank for helping her to get over them. But she didnât want to think about him. Not now. And he still hadnât got in touch; hadnât responded to her text.
âTheyâll still at the scene at Meyerâs but there didnât seem to be a break-in or anything stolen, as far as Kiki could tell them, anyway. One of the filing cabinets was open but he may just have been looking through something when he died.â
Astrid, Rudy and now Meyer, all dead and at least two of them murdered.
âDo you think it has anything to do with your case?â
âProbably. Maybe. I donât know.â
âLet me ask you then, Gawn, de Bek may not have been killed but whoever is involved in all this had arranged for your Australian, Smith or Clinton or whatever his name
